The Blumbellies
Hi! We’re the The Blumbellies — a music-for-families project by Philly-based musicians Bekki Schwartz and Noah Teachey. As The Blumbellies, we perform a fun, folksy, and eclectic mix of original songs and classic tunes. Inspired first and foremost by our belief that music is more fun when everyone’s a part of it, we take a playful and participatory approach to family music, making lots of room in our songs and sets for the whole family to join in and create together.

Their second EP, "Everybody Play," was released on Tuesday, March 4. Starring a bowl, a tennis ball, and the addition of the theremin, it will have the most fickle wanna-be musician digging through the cupboard in search of the perfect instrument….
“The music we're making as The Blumbellies is about, very specifically, singing or dancing, or playing along. So it's participatory,” says Teachey. “It's about removing that barrier between listening and actively participating, which I think is important for everyone enjoying music.”
Live shows
We love special occasions, community events, and celebrations of all kinds. We play a family friendly concert-style set, with lots of opportunity for singing, dancing, and playing along. Our standard set includes a fun, folksy rocky mix of Blumbellies originals and classic children’s songs.

Husband and wife team Noah Teachey and Bekki Schwartz recorded their first EP as The Blumbellies in January 2025. They had just written and performed some wintry songs for a New Years’ Party at East Falls’s beloved Rutabaga Toy Library — and the whole thing was so much fun, they hurried home to get a few tunes down on tape to share with friends, family, and their East Falls neighbors. It’s been all fun and games ever since!
Bekki and Noah are licensed music teachers with over a decade each of experience working with kids of all ages, and they prioritize participation and creative exploration in the songs they write and perform. As music teachers first and foremost, they know that creativity grows in small moments of experimentation and repetition. When we sing our favorite songs over and over again, when we repeat a catchy tune and change the lyrics to make them sillier, when we explore all the strange and unexpected sounds of new and found instruments, when we jam and play together — we are building our creative muscles and getting comfortable trying new things. Bekki and Noah design their songs and sets with lots of opportunity for the whole crew to join in, play, and create together. Music’s more fun when everyone’s a part of it!

A note from The Blumbellies
There’s a phenomenon we love witnessing over and over again. When we’re making music with young children, and we say, “Let’s sing a song together! One, two, ready, go”…often, kids will begin singing at the moment we say “go,” before they know what song we’re singing, and whether or not they’ve ever heard the song before. (In our experience, the grown-ups are rarely so brave!) Are they singing the “right” words? Who knows, and who cares? This sort of openness to exploring, experimenting, and jumping right in to be a part of the experience - that’s exactly the magic we want to encourage in our songs and sets, and in ourselves, too.
We’re constantly working on resisting the grown-up habit of hanging back and waiting for “right” answers. To encourage creativity in ourselves and others means experimenting, trying out new ideas, and not thinking so much about perfection. Jump in, jam along - everyone’s invited to explore with us. We believe music is meant to be made spontaneously, playfully, and most importantly, all together.
